An integral part of bass fishing is your awareness of what’s under the water. Electronics help a bunch in that regard, and visual cues along a shoreline also help. But sometimes the best determining factor in finding a good fish-holding location is what you can see under the water with your own two eyes. The tool that generally helps you achieve that is polarized sunglasses.
The market has really been flooded now with sunglasses for the discerning angler. Fit, fashion and function are all available in a high quality pair of shades made specifically for fishing. There are lots of new styles out from several manufacturers for 2012. Here are some new offerings we got to sample and test that we like for the new year.

Strike King Camo | $19.99
These new camouflage shades are great for the angler and hunter alike. They feature grey lenses, a more matted finish and are light and comfortable. But the best part is the price. The sunglasses feature their Advanced Polarization Technology which provides better visuals with better resistance to scratching all at a very affordable price. These are great to throw in the truck or boat and not worry about them but always have them when you need them. We keep several pairs in our truck and boats.

Vicious Fierce | $59.99
The new shades from Vicious offer great features like polycarbonate lenses and sleek styling with a good mid-range price point. The Fierce shades are comfortable have good coverage area and fit well to larger faces. The have interesting colors and added effects like the chrome along the nose bridge. They come with a great case that is hard shell and conforms around the lenses to protect them from most mishaps on and off the water.

Browning Boss | $89.95
We like the square shape and larger side arms of the Boss frames from Browning Eyewear. These shades feature good lenses, snug fitting glasses that are light and look good. These sunglasses come with both a soft and hard case which is nice for storing and keeping your lenses clean and scratch free. They use CR39 lenses which is borrowed from the formulation of aircraft windshields that had to be 50 times more impact resistant than ordinary windshields. The frames resist scratching and are shatterproof, one advantage over glass or cheap plastic lenses.

SunDog Phantom Mela-Lens™ | $179.99
A neat new sunglasses offering are the new Sun Dog Mark Melnyk Signature Series Phantom frames with Mela-Lens Polarize Photochromic Plus. In layman’s terms, the tint in these sunglasses actually changes as it gets sunnier and cloudier. Where we’ve really seen these glasses shine is on days where the clouds come in and out or when maybe a front blows in. It’s crazy how well you can still see on those darker days with shades on. That’s a real plus when you’re on the water facing ever-changing conditions. The frames’ large coverage area also help block side flare from the sun when peering into the water. And even though they have a large coverage area, they fit snuggly to an anglers head.

Costa Little Harbor | $249.99
Not to be left out, we had to sample some frames just for the ladies. Several of these frames could work for women but we thought some frames designed just for women that were as much about how they look on your face as they are about how you look into the water. The Costa Little Harbor frames we sampled came in a great looking tortoise shell frame with amber lenses. We had Jason’s wife test them driving, working outside, around the lake and beyond to see how they held up. She loves the big coverage area, the lightweight and comfortable fit. The arms hinges keep the frames tight and they came with a great hard case and cleaning cloth. The 580P is one fine polycarbonate lens and really shows off how good this pair of Costa Little Harbor is for fishing, driving or just a day lounging in the sun.
