The Wired2Fish Top 20 Most Influential Bass Fishing Lures List

Zoom Brush Hog bass
We finally reached the end of our 20 Most Influential Bass Fishing Lures of All Time countdown. It was a lot of fun doing this daily over the last several weeks and we thoroughly enjoyed reading your thoughts and comments on the selections.

Obviously there were some folks who thought this was a "favorite lures" list. But it wasn't. We were simply looking for the lures over the years that have had big impacts on fishing and the manufacturing of fishing tackle. What lures really changed the landscape of bass fishing and the fishing industry?

The other problem we found is 20 is a very small number. And that left out a lot of baits we really wanted to work into the mix but never could seem to find a way to get them in there. Lures like the Sweet Beaver, Devil's Horse, Tiny Torpedo, Power Worm, Snagproof Frog and Pork Frogs were borderline in the low 20s and just couldn't bump one of our others out of the mix.

We hope you enjoyed the list and since we figured some folks missed a few here and there, here is the entire list, with links to each with photos and explanations of why that lure was selected at that number.

1. The Creme Wiggle Worm

2. The Arkie Jig

3. The Rapala Original Floater

4. The Zorro Aggravator Spinnerbait

5. The Bill Lewis Rat-L-Trap

6. The Gene Larew Salt Craw

7. The Fred Young Big O

8. The Mann's Jelly Worm

9. The Bobby Garland Gitzit

10. The Fred Arbogast Hula Popper

11. The Heddon Zara Spook

12. The Yamamoto Senko

13. The Lunker City Slug-Go

14. The Rapala Shad Rap

15. The Basstrix Paddle Tail Swimbait

16. The Lunker Lure Buzzbait

17. The Johnson Silver Minnow

18. The Norman DD 22

19. The Smithwick Rogue

20. The Zoom Brush Hog

I had eight or nine in the top 20:) I guess I was too generic w/ one, & too old for some of my picks.

All I have to say is #11 Uncle Josh Pork Frog trailer - should be in the top 10.

I'm guessing that most of these lures were custom painted by Dwain Batey? Right?

Every bait photographed in this list is in its original color. Dwain has painted a bunch of baits for Todd and Jason. But none of the baits pictured in this list.

The Big O was way to low. It should have been in the top 3 easy, if not #1.

Great list--caught my first bass 50 years ago on a black creme worm & was hooked for life. Fished all those in the list. What about Heddon's Tiny Torpedo or lipless crankbaits.

I am completly suprised that a Trout bait (the bigger swimbaits not the paddle tails) is not on here...spacificly the A.C plug...it started the whole swimbait revolution...other than that good list.

Awesome selection. There are just so many Baits and so many Fishermen & Women with different thoughts of their Lure Favorites. Why not do a Hardback Book of Best of Lures for 2011 as BassMaster done in 1989? (Just a thought) Thanks for bringing back some Fishy Memories.

Does green pumpkin ring a bell?
Zooms mistake run of pumpkin color plastic in the mid-80s started the natural color worm color craze that still going strong today. Pumpkin color lizards were the bomb and still the #1 bait for carolina riggin.

Over all pretty good list. But I would have to give the zoom brush hog more credit and put it on up the list some. I'm a big soft bait fisherman and I've found the baby brush as affective as any plastic on the market especially on pickwick lake.

NO WIGGLE WART??

Great list, I most definitely use number 3 the Original Floater along with some custom swimbaits. Heck of a list though...
