20 Most Influential Bass Fishing Lures | No. 1 Creme Wiggle Worm

And the winner is ... all of us. Thanks to the Nick and Cosma Creme melting some plastic on their stove in 1949 and pouring it into some molds, we all have all these great soft plastics and other soft baits to fish with for bass.

The Creme Wiggle Worm started the entire soft plastic sub section of the fishing tackle industry and it's impact was immediate. The first packs were five worms to a card for $1 and they were sold by mail.

When they showed the product at the Cleveland Sportsmen's Show in 1951, the distributor sold 9,600 packs in just a few days and the boom for soft plastics had begun.

Not only did Nick Creme give us the Wiggle Worm, but he also was one of the first to use "national field staff" to test his worms and introduce them to other anglers. A successful business venture that still works today in the bait business.

The Creme Scoundrel became their best-selling soft plastic of all time. It was originally sold as a pre-rigged worm and many of us learned to fish a worm as children on this rig. The Wiggle Worm is no longer available but the Scoundrel is still a very popular worm when bass are shallow in the Spring.

The success of Creme's soft plastics really elavated fishing tackle and made it a viable business for a lot of folks. This one innovation moved fishing tackle forward more than any other in our estimation.

So thank you Nick and Cosma Creme for coming up with a seamingly simple idea and expanding our horizons for catching bass infinitely!

The No. 1 Most Influential Bass Fishing Lure of All Time is the Creme Wiggle Worm!

I just learned something new! I always thought the scoundrel was first followed by the wiggle worm but it isn't the case, well done guys!!

Whole lotta fun guys. The only top 10 selection that I can disagree with is the the choice of the Gene Larew salt craw ahead of a pork trailer. That being said, the whole influential baits series was equal parts education and entertainment. I enjoyed it. Thanks

Congrats to the CREME !However, I will have to say, I am a little disappointed that the FLIPTAIL worm was not in the top 20. Best worm ever produced in my humble opinion ! By the way, it is coming back on the marketvery soon. Can't wait. No other worms will be needed.

I also agree that Fliptail should have been on the list. There is no question that Creme deserved to the #1, but Fliptail should have been in Mann's place at #8. Fliptail was the first paddle tail design, the first translucent color design, and the first with a slick finish/scent. All of those things were copied by Mann's Jelly Worm with his own variations. I think Mann's is on the list because it was marketed better, but Fliptail should have been on the list instead because it was more influential.

Nice list but you left off the most important lure in any fishermans tackle box. "Confidenece" tahaks to Bill Dance and others whom had their fishng tv shows during the B.A.S. S. early days. Don't forget it was was Homer Circle the most knowledgable fisheramn of modern time who said if he only could have one lure it would be a jig head with an assortment of soft plastic tails. Catch anything anytime and anywhere. Best Plastic worm of all time is the Fliptail and the Jelly-Worm by my old friend Tom Mann.

A gentleman that lived next door to my Dad in Florida was a distributor for Creme many years ago. He sent me a bunch of their worms which were lost in shipment, so I never received them. What a catch that would have been.

This has been a great series Jason and enjoyed by all. Thank you for your hard work and continued great stuff from W2F!!!

The godfather of plastic worms. I wonder if Nick Creme ever realized that his worms would be the foundation for the plastic worm market as it is today. My hats off to the Wired2Fish staff, this is a wonderful website.

Wow, I caught a lot of fish on Creme worms but, not the kind we use today but the pre-rigged black worms with spinners were the go to baits in the 70's growing up. I watched my Dads friend consistently catch Largemouth on these time and time again until I couldnt stand it no longer ... Nice Piece here...

Robert. You can still purchase the mann's worms online.

MannsBait.com

Just go under Soft Baits, All Other Soft Plastics, Jelly Worms and then pick your size and it will give you color options to get to the Grape with Firetail worms.
