20 Most Influential Bass Fishing Lures | No. 7 Fred Young Big O

The Original Fred Young Big O
Hardly anyone talks about square bill crankbaits anymore. Okay that was a joke. It's all you hear about anymore when it comes to shallow crankbaits. KVD won the Bassmaster Classic this year on one and several other major tournaments have been won on square billed crankbaits. Some folks think they were just created in the last 5-10 years but the credit actually goes to Fred Young when he started hand carving his Big O back in 1967. That's right it's 45 years old.

His hand carved crankbaits were an immediate success and in great demand for years. He would hand carve and hand paint each bait and at the time, no two baits were alike. It wasn't until Cotton Cordell took over that the bait was more readily duplicated. However it was also changed to plastic at that time.

The original Big O set the bar for shallow balsa baits. It could walk through cover and deflect off rocks and hard bottoms like no other bait before it. So it was immediately popular with avid anglers.

Now the market is flooded with square bills as we reviewed in our Two Part Series on Square Bill Wars. So its influence is still seen in todays manufacturing and power fishing patterns.

For this incredibly long lasting influence, we named the Fred Young Big O our No. 7 Most Influential Bass Fishing Lure of all time.

Good choice. I have about a dozen silver Big-O's in my box that go to the river with me every time I go.

Been using them for over 20 years without a complaint , though they used to be hard to find in some areas.

Good choice. These baits are definitely en vogue. I was soooo close to putting this in my list. I don't know why I didn't. I probably tossed it out for a Senko.

Good choice. This is another classic bait that still works well today. I still have about a dozen or so of them and they still catch bass.

Wow! I had three ORIGINAL Big O's and have none now. They were - and still are - the bomb! WHen they first came out guys were carrying them around in egg cartons to protect the balsa bait from bruising. They were one of the absolute most earth-shattering developments in the artificial bait industry to have ever come along.

I jsut found five Big O's signed and numbered by Fred C Young that I thought I had lost years 15 years ago.

It was a real thrill to find them again. I use to be involved a little in the industry but have been away from all fishing for close to 20 years. I now just enjoy the memories of those days.

Father-in-law has three fred young "Big O" crankbaits and one unfinished that was traded to him by a relative of Rayo Breckenridge for one of my father-in-laws original baits. Who is the "jm" initials on the bottom and what is the value of these lures?

I HAVE FOUR BIG O BASS PLUGS . THEY WERE HAND CARVED BY UNCLE FRED YOUNG,AND GIVEN TO MY FATHER BILL YOUNG BY UNCLE ODIS YOUNG
THE ONES I HAVE ARE HAND CARVED FROM WOOD THERE IS NO PLASTIC ON THEM.TWENTYFIVE YEARS AGO THERE WAS AN OFFER OF $15,000 EACH FOR THEM. DOES ANYONE KNOW THE VALUE OF THEM NOW?

JM was John Marrow, a local postman in Oak Ridge, TN. who delivered Fred's mail. Current value for an original Fred Young Big O is $300.00 to $500.00 with the signed lures bringing the higher price.
