Unique Custom Rod Turning Heads Now

JB's Custom Bass Rods Spiral wrap closeup

We stopped in at the JB Custom Rods booth at the Forrest Wood Cup. JB was busy with several customers so we talked about the rods with Chris Wood from the NC State College Bass Fishing team and pro Guido Hibdon.

These rods are custom made with high-modulous blanks. The first of many unique aspects of the rods were spiral wrapped guides. Several years ago, some major manufacturers experimented with spiral wrapped guides, but because of cost and time, it's since faded into the background. These rods are bringing back that concept with pros having success with them.

Basically spiral wrapping eliminates rod roll when fighting fish with a baitcasting rod. On most rods the guides are in a straight line on top of the blank. As you fight a fish from side to side, some rods will litterally twist and roll under load. This causes stress points and weakens a rod if it twists too far.

But with spiral wrapping the guides spin from the top of the blank to the bottom of the blank successively so that it ends us more like a spinning rod. It also supposedly reduces line slap against the blank when casting which results in longer casts.

The guides themselves are concept guides. When the term concept guide was first coined it was basically because they were testing a new concept with guide manufacturing. Basically with concept guides, you simply use the smallest guide you can to get from one point on a rod to the next point - usually the next guide.

JB Custom Bass Rod Grip

The other unique aspect is the hardened resin grips. Rather than foam or cork that can dampen sensitivity these rods feature a hardened with resin grip. The grip actually felt pretty comfortable and Wood assured us they don't get slick even in the rain.

The rods felt a little heavy to us, we're guessing because of the grip, but the features were very cool. We made a few pitches with one that had Guido's signature US Reel on it. The rod seemed real sensitive and handled well.

John Crews also uses these rods on the Bassmaster Elite Series. He won one event pitching with a heavy rod on the California Delta and got third on Guntersville cranking a Spro Little John DD with the crankbait rod. To read more about these rods, visit custombassrods.com.

These types of rods made their way into the industry years ago . The load and rod turn is not a major issue when many anglers are using 40lb.Test and hoisting fish into Boats, banks and docks without nets.

I must however state..."This looks like a fine made graphite rod which is made with care and nothing but the best components.I actually believe that smaller rod line guides work well under many conditions, however,Line lb.Test & Lure weights are an indication of adverse action in castability as the line fights the bending rod line eyelets(Line Guides) as I field tested many brand names in the late 80's and 90's.

Being a flashy looking glass looking graphite piece...along with the yesteryear Diawa in rod blank line design...this rod is a great looking collectable, however, the payout here is Purchase what the winners use...Quantum,Rouge,Wright & Mcgill...GLoomis Best of I-Cast ect.

JD makes a fine product if you want to experiment with a cost...the day the price point comes down is the day they will fly off the rod holders at the retailer...Flash & Dash means nothing...warranty and weather related temp performance means everything and makes all the disserence...

The Dilalli looks similar as do many others and to report on one specific rod as the future is not good for the entire industry...I say,as the G-Man says..."You Never have enough rods"

I would love to have a composite e/glass &Graphite mixture combined with wrapped quality cork...but that won't happen nowadays as Quality cork no longer exist...Give me a Mr.Ken Whiting Nano -Yube construction,Quantum Rods,Rouge Rods and a GLoomis or Lami or give me DEATH!

Very Pretty...I would have to field test it to give full report...

I own two of JB's rods and I must say that they are every bit as good if not better than any of my other rods. I own a st. croix avid, shimano compre, quantam kvd cranking rod, falcon lowrider, a boyd duckett micro magic rod, and a couple of bass pros high end rods. As you can see I own a pretty good lineup of rods from various companies so I'm not blowing smoke out here. There is a reason that these rods are now being used by John Crews on the BASS Elite Series. They are the real deal. The price is no different than you'll pay for another high end rod. People become scared when a "custom" tag is associated with an item. Don't let these rods scare you away. JB is a heck of a rod maker and I promise he has any rod that you are looking for whether it be a cranking stick for those 20 foot plugs, or just a small finesse rod in order to throw a shakey head on. Give his rods a try, you will not be disappointed.
